Restoring the Coral Reefs of Nusa Penida
We are a local community working to restore coral reef ecosystems in the waters around Nusa Penida. This is what we do and why it matters.
About Us
A community-led effort to protect Nusa Penida's reefs
Nuansa Pulau is a local organization in Nusa Penida dedicated to restoring and protecting coral reef ecosystems. We work alongside residents, divers, and research partners to rebuild damaged reefs through hands-on transplantation and long-term monitoring.
What sets us apart is our focus on the local community. This is not a top-down initiative. It's driven by people who live here, understand the waters, and depend on healthy reefs for their livelihood.
What We Do
Our Programs
Coral Transplantation
We grow coral fragments in underwater nurseries and transplant them to damaged reef areas. Each fragment is tagged and monitored over time to track survival rates.
Ecosystem Monitoring
Regular surveys using Belt Transect and Point Intercept Transect methods. This data helps us understand reef health trends and adjust our approach.
Education & Outreach
We run programs for local schools, the dive industry, and visiting tourists, building awareness about coral ecosystems and how to protect them.

Join a coral planting session
Experience coral restoration firsthand with our field team in the waters of Nusa Penida. The session begins with a short presentation on coral biology: how corals grow, the difference between hard and soft corals, and the threats facing reef ecosystems today.
You'll then work alongside our marine biologist to fragment a coral cutting from a donor colony, attach it to a substrate, and plant it in the nursery where it will grow before being outplanted to the reef. After planting, you'll snorkel the restoration site to see established coral fields and the marine life they support.
